After the Diagnosis… A Guide to Processing the News and Moving Forward

Jeff Cadwell, Sylvia McGrath & I (Trish Robichaud, co-founder here at were initially strangers living in different cities and countries yet all three of us were on a very similar journey. We’d all been diagnosed with a chronic illness and and after years of trial and error, remissions and relapses, learnings and growth opportunities, we found each other online. With a passion to share our experiences to help others, we wrote a book titled

After the Diagnosis: The Journey Beyond

It all began for me on November 3rd, 1993, one of the most memorable moments of my life, the day my neurologist informed me that I had Multiple Sclerosis. At this point I had become partially blind, suffered a myriad of symptoms which included poor balance, numbness, tingling and severe pain. I was only 30 years old and felt destroyed by this news, like I was living a nightmare that she couldn’t wake up from.

When I finally did “wake up,” I found myself deep in a severe and debilitating bout of depression. What ensued in the next few years only added insult to injury. Having lost my job due to my diagnosis I had to battle for justice for myself, which took its toll on my physical and emotional health causing me to dive even deeper into depression.

After the Diagnosis - The Journey Beyond - eBook coverWhat I could have used back then was a book to walk me through the grieving process and give me a road map to getting to the journey beyond the diagnosis. I had enormous fear around what the future would hold for a woman with a disability both physically and financially.

Then finally one day, at my lowest bottom with the depression, I decided that I needed to move forward with my life and take what control I could over my health.

Eventually I learned to manage my MS symptoms by implementing major lifestyle changes, becoming self-aware about my health and through stress management practices. I’m now thriving, living a very full and enriched life despite my life-long battle with depression, almost 20 years with MS, and most recently now with heart disease.

I am certainly living proof that facing a chronic illness or disability can become a catalyst for personal growth and self-discovery.
